Furniture Trends for 2022

by BrandSource Canada

Spring is such a great time for renewed energy. We’re gearing up for the warmer weather, and to celebrate many of us turn to the inside of our homes as we prep to get outside. Where are we headed in 2022? Think bold, think chic, think maximalism, think curvy, sultry, and sassy. We’re bringing the outdoors in, taking the indoors out, making it colourful, and elevating the experience everywhere.

We’ve got your top five home décor trends to look for in 2022 and our guide to shopping and implementing these trends in your own home.

This trend involves the mixing of bright bold colours like purples and green, pink and green, and more.

Trend #1: Peri Green

We all know and love the Pantone Colour of the year, Veri Peri. This trend combines this bold and energetic purple hue with green. It’s a trend we’re seeing a lot of for home décor and interiors in 2022, the mixing of bright bold colours like purples and green, pink and green, and more. Purple pillows with a pop of pink trim. A great green dresser with purple knobs. A bold lamp with an even bolder shade. A fabulous area rug with a mix of colours, or try layering rugs for maximalist appeal.

 How to work this trend:

The easiest way to bring green into your own home is with plants. The biophilia trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and it’s a great way to bring the outdoors in along with bringing more colour into your home. Other ways to work this trend are to update and elevate your sofa pillows with a mix of textures and colours (like pinks and greens), update an occasional chair with a bold mix of fabrics, or mix and match your bedding

Trend #2: Maximalism

Maximalism is a BIG bold trend and is a stark contrast to the super clean, super calm minimalist Scandinavian style trend of recent years. What is maximalism? It’s not clutter or mess, oh no. Maximalism is a bold use of colour, mixing colours, mixing patterns, and using your home to show your personality. Maximalist homes feature collections, vintage treasures, great gallery walls, and represent the distinct personality of the creator living within the painted, wallpapered, and decorated walls.

Maximalism is a big, bold trend.

 How to work this trend:

This home décor trend isn’t about clutter remember, it’s about mixing and matching colours and patterns. Maximalism isn’t necessarily more stuff, it’s more colour, more pattern, more texture, more personality. To make this trend work in your home, be open to colour and use it everywhere. Try creating a great gallery wall with unique art, vintage finds, or framed mementos from the past. Make every throw pillow a different colour, pattern, or design. Add a big bold area rug or unique wallpaper to rooms to add more colour, more contrast, and more pattern. Create a space to display your favourite mixing bowls, or cannisters, or vintage camera collection. Living a maximalist life is living life out loud. It’s a brave way to enter 2022!

 Trend #3: Curved Silhouettes

Interiors for 2022 are getting a much-needed feminine makeover. We’re seeing curved edges and furniture with softer more sultry shapes. We’re seeing this trend take shape (pun intended) in the form of curved sofas and sectionals, beautifully shaped office, desk, and dining room chairs with curved or rounded backs. We’re seeing bean shaped coffee tables and other furniture with softer edges. Why? It’s playful and fun. It’s new and exciting and also very nostalgic. The rounded edges and softer features make us feel comforted and at ease.

The rounded edges and softer features of curved silhouettes make us feel comforted and at ease.

 How to work this trend:

Even if you’re not ready to dive head first into a curved sofa just yet, there are many entry level ways to see if this trend is one for you. Occasional chairs with rounded backs, uniquely shaped coffee and side tables, and even round pillows, round art on the walls, and circular mirrors are a great way to incorporate this curvy trend in your home for 2022.

Trend #4: Elevated Outdoor Living

A trend we’ve been seeing for a few years now (and doesn’t seem to be losing steam) is bringing the outdoors in. What’s new for 2022 is we’re elevating the outdoors and taking the inside out. Outdoor living rooms and kitchen areas are continuing to gain in popularity and with that we’re seeing outdoor furniture expand to include more styles typical of indoors. Goodbye, plastic lawn furniture, hello stylish outdoor room you’ll be entertaining in from May to September.

We’re elevating the outdoors and taking the inside out.

 How to work this trend:

Outdoor fabrics have come a long way and investing in a new outdoor sofa for all your hosting, reading, and relaxing could be the solution to summer time fun. Outdoor kitchen areas with sinks, a prep area for the barbecue, and a cooler for beverages all help to make summer entertaining easier and a little more elevated.

Trend #5: Savvy Chic

Black, gold, and white: it’s a combination we’re seeing a lot of for home décor and decorating trends for 2022 and beyond. This trend is appearing in chic bathrooms – think black walls, black and white tiled floors, gold mirror and brass hardware. We’re seeing great pieces like area rugs, art, and more in black and white reminiscent of 1920s era glam. This trend is a great compliment to the maximalist trend, as it refines it slightly and offers the eye a resting spot in a bright bold colourful home.

With the savvy chic trend, it is both the little details and the big ones that can make a great impact.

 How to work this trend:

To work this savvy chic home décor trend into your own home, try updating hardware on cabinets to a bold or brass tone, or painting the powder room a bold black. With this trend it is both the little details (gold hardware or trim on art or mirrors) and the big ones (all black walls or bold tiled floors) that can make a great impact.
